Hi there! I am new in the DSLR part of photography and was was wondering if the Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 Di LD Macro Zoom Lens would be a good first choice for a beginner? I am using a Nikon D40, and I think it will work with it. Some review sites say it will and some say it won't (however I think that are talking about a different Tamron 30-300mm model).

Should I think about buying this? Will it work with the Nikon D40?

Or.. Should I spend a bit more and go with the Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR Zoom Lens?

Other than Amazon.. anyone know any good credible websites to buy these lenses?

You have to get the latest model (Jan 2008) designatet "A17NII" to have autofocus with your D40!
The lens was tested in the German magazine ColorFoto (edition 10/2008) with a total score of 65.5 pts. against the Nikon Nikkor 55-200 VR with 68.5 pts. The Tamron copy had quite a huge decentering defect with 44% loss of resolution at 145mm focal length. Another example of sloppy quality control!
