I have a Sigma zoom lens that I've only used about 7-8 times. I bought it with my Minolta Maxxum 7Xi, but only used it a couple of times before I went digital. Then, with my recent purchase of a Sony A300, I pulled it back out. It's in "mint" condition.

This morning when I used the Sigma zoom to take some pics at a cold soccer game (34 degrees), it made a clicky grinding sound when I turned off my camera after just a few minutes, and it hasn't worked since (grinding noise any time I turn on and off the camera and won't function). My kit lens and Minolta 28-105xi power zoom worked fine.

Is this something that can be fixed? Any clue what could have happened?

Sounds like the focus mechanism is shot. These things happen and I think you might want to contact Sigma if it's under warranty. You migh still want to contact them in any case, since I've heard of Sigma taking back lenses that were out of warranty.
