yes a bit more range would be nice, but I do love my 70-300. Its a great all-round portable lens particularly in bushy or forested areas, easy to carry around. Generally speaking in those areas birds aren`t that easily spooked and you can get reasonably close. Considering the dust, humidity and rain I have subjected the camera and lens too, its all performed faultlessly. I was a bit touchy about all that, because its what wrecked my Sony A100 its 75-300zoom.
Have a friend that recently bought a 60D and the 70-300 Sp VC Tamron, I had a bit of a play with it and don`t find it much slower to the 70-300L with the 7D. Just wondering if your cameras focus system maybe the culprit here, the 550D or T2 may just not be as quick. Didn`t get to explore its AI servo tracking on a bird in flight, but seemed responsive enough.
Would love a longer zoom for our open areas, were the birds have a larger threat zone. The 1.4 kenko extender works reasonable well on the 70-300 up to around 280, so get around 390 at f8. IS is still very very good with focus speed and IQ down a bit.
A Canon EF 500mm f/4.0 L IS II USM would be nice, but not a realistic. Its about priorities, would rather take time off from work and take family and caravan on a holiday for a few month than spend it on a fancy lens. If canon refreshed the 400 prime 400 F5.6 with IS I think I would get it.
