I"ll get a decent one (not necessarily ff) when I do. The High ISO noise performance and fast autofocus are important to me. Don't need too much burst speeds.

if you're on a strict budget, the d40 would be my highest recommendation

if you have a little more cash (like twice as much if not thrice), you can get a canon 5D mk I used ... i saw one for $900 locally (NYC) and it's not got a single wasted quality - it's just IQ and sometimes i wish i had one instead of the glitzy 50D

I would bet on the D40 too, that's for sure. But I'd also get a fast prime, a "really" wide lens and a >400mm lens. Together they aren't gonna be cheap, and so I guess I'd rather get some better body - with >=10MP, and better (1600 ISO) ISO performance. That isn't gonna be anytime soon, as I hardly get the time to go out shooting. But I hope prices will fall with time, and if I can afford to get a ff body that would be wonderful. I think the 40D would also be on my list if I were to get one now.

possibly one of my best shots so far in my 3 week DSLR experience, and it's of a squirrel!!

This was shot at Heaton Park in Manchester, they'd come right up to you to check your hand even if you had no nuts.
