Just experimenting with my D300 and a 60mm macro lens and took this photo:

I like the colour however it's not really sharp and I'm not entirely sure why. I suppose it could take some getting used to the focusing system on the D300 but is there anything I can do to check the lens?

Hi Welly,

you could try and shoot something down a line..like the edge of a table.. so see where the focal plane is. Then you can examine if that is sharp enough for you or if it falls below what you believe is correct? Ideally you'd use a tripod and the timer for shutter-release.

I can see that it was taken outdoors - any chance that handshake and/or even the most minuscule wind or vibration may have made it less than optimally sharp do you think?

51 focus points..I can barely keep up with the three my D40 has...lol.

Good luck with the investigation!

Cheers :-)

Nice shot! Seems reasonably sharp to me. :)

BTW, is that the new AF-S 60 or the older AF-D version? I'm quite interested in the former.

Cheers for the suggestions Lah! I might try again tomorrow in brighter light, faster shutter speed/smaller aperture and maybe even on a tripod.

Graham, it's the older AF-D one. I got it for a snip off of craigs list!

I've heard some bad things about the bokeh of that version but that looks good to me! I'll look into that version too, thanks Welly.
