I recently startet shooting some of my son's collection of mollusk. I was fascinated by the thought of shining with a flash through their shell and see what comes up (no mollusks were harmed in the course of this action  ).
I laid the shells directly on top of the flash and thought at first, that the light would totally blow the picture, but I was pleasantly surprised!
Later I thought of a nice background and found some black metal grid to place the shells on.
I shot averything freehand because adjusting the angle in macro-shooting with a tripod is exhausting. I did not fear shake as the flash is ultra short. And everything was shot with the 105mm macro mostly at f32 to get a decent depth of field.

Nice photos Thomas!

I really like using back-light when shooting macro photos of leaves - really shows up the veins...
