Camera Labs

Quite often you see nice close up detailed pictures of a single item such as lenses, laptops, ipods etc.. on a nice plain white background so that there is nothing else complicating the picture.

Im just wondering, is there any good technique or way to get this nice clear white background effect? Do they put the item on a white sheet or something, or is it a photoshop affect?

I always have problems taking pictures of items because I dont have a good sice space where there will be nothing else in the background of the image making the background look busy.

I have taken an example from nathan's flickr album, I hope you dont mind:


I want to get this technique so I can take nice pictures of items for my blog and for ebay.

A white piece of paper or something like that could do the trick i guess...

You can lay a sheet flat on a surface and have it gently curve upwards.

I normally use many sheets of A4 paper to make up a white background. But the picture will need a bit editing in PS.

i went to the local walmart and grabbed a plain white sheet for 5$ and tacked it up against the wall in my unfinished basement and then pulled it out to the floor and placed some weight on the bottom to hold it that way.

photoshoping is done afterwards

I tried this, but I thought the sheet was to thin and did not look right, so I went to fabric land and picked up a off-wite (egg-shell maybe?) 9x12 sheet. it was about 3-4 times thicker then a bed sheet. It looks alot better with the thicker fabric.

I all so used the same thickness fabric in this photo. I did add a red place mat just for looks, but the red and black sheets are the same thickness.

grahamnp has it spot-on - that's how we do our product photography...

Although I do also normally cut out the images in Photoshop afterwards...
