The back streets around Deira are as far away as you can imagine from the glitz of the 5* hotels and beaches that Dubai's famous for. Along with the Fish Market, the Gold and Spice Souks are on the tourist radar but people seldom venture off the main strips of stalls and shops. One block back it's a different world and ripe for street, candid and environmental portraits.

Here's a few from a 90 minute walkabout this morning. I travelled light with a 50mm f1.4G on my D700 and processed from RAW, through Nik Color Efex and then Nik Silver Efex.

Great set Phil

The tonal range on these is superb. Does it take a lot of time to process through silver fx? I use LR and it takes about 5-10 minutes per shot. I may have to look into silver fx.

I love seeing your images! I have been considering the 50mm 1.4G lens, and it is good to see you used it for these shots.

Thanks kimchi

For a straight conversion, using Color and the Silver Efex, it takes around 3 minutes per shot, ending up with a colour and b&w version. Some are more complicated than others. This one, for example, required a tonal contrast layer in Color Efex brushed on, followed by a neutral b&w layer in Silver Efex and then a brushed High Structure layer in Silver Efex. I like the result though!

Thanks RexGig - I'm finding it good for street, and it's pretty small compared to the Sigma version I looked at.

I managed to get a good 2nd hand version for a good price, otherwise the 1/8G would have been my choice. I need f1.4 a lot as well though
