The Vancouver Canucks are in the finals against the Boston Bruins. Vancouver is a Hockey town, and the City shuts down a couple of blocks downtown and shows the games on a huge screen to thousands of gathered fans.
Here are a couple BW shots from game 3.

This is what happened after Game 7.
The City had over 100,000 fans downtown and the Police had no plan.

The image of the burning patrol car is of special interest to me, as here in Texas, most police officers own most of our equipment. While my agency owns the vehicles, I would lose thousands of dollars' value in personal property if rioters torched my assigned vehicle. (Two Canon 7D bodies, several lenses, 550EX and 220EX flashes, two tripods with heads, spare duty pistol, and many lesser items.)

Fortunately, we have not had a significant riot in the area I patrol in my 27+ years of service, when the local sports teams have gone to the play-offs, and lost, nor for any other reason. I hope we stay peaceful for the few remaining years I wear the badge. (There have been smaller, mini-riots, that were terrifying enough.)

In mentioning material things, I do not mean to diminish any personal injuries and losses that Vancouver police officers suffered in the riots. I pray for rapid healing of all injuries, physical and psychological, that may have occurred, and empathize for any material losses.

WestCoast, I like this set, you captured the intensity on the fans faces extremely well. Surprised to see what happened after the game, I know Canadians are not like that.

Cheers

It seems as if riots like these are bound to happen, no matter the outcome of the game. Kinda ironic that violence is the name of the game both on and off the field in hockey.

December 26, 2011 issue of Sports Illustrated (Volume 115, No.25) had a piece on the riots called "The Kiss" on page 64. It follows 7 people and the events around a photo of a man and woman kissing on the ground that went viral last summer. I thought it was an interesting 8 pages.
