Camera Labs

I rigged up a very primitive "studio" in my basement one day and took this among other shots. I would like some feedback on what's good and bad if you would be so kind.

I'm not a big fan of very dark outfits with very dark backgrounds (makes the head look like it is floating in mid air).

Other than that, the picture looks great. I can't really tell how good the focus is, because the image is pretty small. Beautiful little girl. Love the smile.

Nice light in regards to color, strength, and softness. I agree with esvcasm, the clothing is too dark. I like the first more than the second. Nice work.

Thanks for the replies. Does the red flower take away from the main subject in the black and white photo? They are available on my flickr page in full size if that is more helpful, I wasn't sure what size I could post here so I took the medium size. The link is at the bottom. Thanks.

It draws attention to the flower, and not the girl. In my opinion the girl is just too pretty to be second to a flower. But that is just my opinion.

I would like to take the credit for her looks but I would be lying! The more I look at them the more I like the color one myslef.

By the way you can eliminate the brown bit on the bottom-right corner of the image its just distracting since the whole background is black and that bit isn't.

I don't know but for my opinion even those colour bids or stitches on her dress can be a distraction as well. I prefer the colour of her face, flower and everything black.

but if you'd like to listen, here's my two cents jingling.

1. i love the tones on the first image. the selective color on the second one died out a while back, but if it's rocks your socks- so be it.

2. there's no catchlight in her eyes, rendering them almost black. maybe next time a weak fill might be due.

I agree on the slective colour, it's a bit dated , it only works now and then. here it distracts from her face too much. Also, if you have Lightroom, try the adjustment brush set to an exposure of say, +0.60 on just her eyes, to reveal them a little more.

The flower in the 2nd version seems a better red than in the first, where it looks a little orange?

Have you tried a full mono version? I think it would look better without the splash of red.

The photo is beautiful, loved the color. And your daughter is also beautiful.

The only think i don't like in the photo is that seams she doesn't have a neck. It seams you used the photoshop and selected her face, and croped, maybe you could use a lighter shirt(white) and do a B&W.

But the picture is great.

The desaturation is a cool tool, but in this case it distracts from the main subject, the girl, what is coming to attention is the flower, and it shouldn't be that way
