I would say 50d and 24-70mmf/2.8L USM, this would be a nice all around combination.

Well, obviously the 60D is better (Considering that it's newer), but the 50D is also cheaper.

For lenses, I don't know that much about the Canons, I'm more of a Nikon guy. Although, if my research serves me well, the 50mm 1.8 mark i or ii looks nice and sharp. Consider a prime, they really are good.

2 different lines of camera's,newer doesn't mean anything. 60d a down grade line. the 50d comes closer to the 7d any day of the week,The 50d only fell slightly short of the d300s. That's why canon realest the 7d.

60d a good camera but it not semi-pro

Depending on your budget, you might be better off first upgrading your lens, and then worry about the body later. Remember, the body is just the thing that hangs off the back of your lens. :)

Since you're using a crop frame camera, and also considering upgrading to another crop frame camera, I would advise against the 24-70mmf/2.8L. The 17-55mm (either f/2.8 or f/4) will likely jive better with what your used to as a "standard zoom".

Image Stabilization is always nice... usually enables you to gain a full stop before you notice camera shake in a comparable lens without stabilization.
