Hello everyone!

I'm planing to buy a Pentax K200D. And in adition I'm planing to buy a 30-700mm lens. I have two choices: the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG and Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG APO. In your considiration which one is better? My budget is short, so I can't exeed 200$.

Thanks in advance!!

Take a look at the Tamron Di 70-300. Similar (if not the same) price. imo, it's really between the Tamron and the Sigma APO.

Tamron appears to be sharper at all focal lengths, but is more prone to chromatic aberration.

Sigma controls CA well, but is softer (especially from 200-300).

The CA is something post processing can handle easily, whereas the softness issue is a little more difficult to fix.

I purchased the Sigma APO, but if I could do it again, I'd probably go with the Tamron. I'm thanking heavens that I don't really like shooting telephoto, and I try to use only up to 200mm. Both double well as a macro lens too!

Thanks!!
I'm new at this and here is an another question: what is the difference between DG and DG APO?
And by the way, do you know anything about the original pentax 70-300mm lens?

as far as i know, DG APO is a better glass than non APO. do not know all the technical data but APO lenses have better characteristics, conserning chromatic abberations.. so, the pictures taken with APO lense look better.

what about Pentax original 70-300mm i do not know anything.

Pentax doesn't have a 70-300,just a 55-300.

Hi Guys

I chose the Sigma apo version as the revews I read showed that it out performed the Tamron.

At 70mm it is very good

At 200mm it is still doing a good job

At 300mm it is losing the plot a little but my results vary partly because my tripod is (sorry for the language) CRAP.

The next thing on my shopping list is a new tripod.

I was at the Llangollen ballon festival this year and observed an older gent with a canon something getting rather frustrated with zoom creep on his Tamron 70-300 - he was not a happy chappy (basically each time he let the camera face down the lens elongated - this is not a problem with the sigma (or at least not my version)

The guy was a nice chap - he approached me and gave me some technique advice (correcting me), made nice somments about my camera then dissapeared - the world needs more nice people like him.

If he reads this and realises that I am referring to him - THANK YOU.

:D
