hello Pentax users, i'm considering to buy a flash, and i'm interested in your experience with them.
my options are Pentax 540 and sigma 530super.

Pentax 540 is quite expensive in my country, however i believe it'll open up new horizons in my photography.

i have several questions.
1. Wireless mode..? is it infrared? or somekind of a different one..?

2. Iis it reliable? how far you can put the flash and still trigger it wirelessly..?

3. Do creative angles like much higher than the camera or much lower than the camera, trigger it as reliable as horizontal angles?

4. Why not to choose Sigma EF-530DG super instead of pentax AF540GZ?

any onther comments on that?

i'll be grateful.

Bonjour Mystic,

Please find here some answers :!:

The control is done by the flash of the K10D (or K20D). There are two modes:
  • the flash of the K10D only sends a message to the AF540GZ with a small flash light
  • the flash of the K10D is fully used to illuminate the subject of the picture and at the same times sends a message to the AF540GZ.

I strongly recommend using rechargeable batteries. I have experienced no problem so far.

Yes, everything is possible. The flash is provided with a support and you can play with the orientation from -10° to +90°.

Please have a look at some of my tests  here.

Enjoy :)

thanks Re_vilo for your input,
but right now, i'm considering two options pentax and sigma,
i heard that the flash by pentax is of a bad build quality, and some other minor inconveniences, so, i'm looking more at sigma..

and right now, do not have any argument, why not to buy sigma flash, it has all that the pentax has.

however one thing doesn't let me to buy it with a calm heart..
if K30D will come out and sigma will not be compatible with it..

otherwise sigma is of more reasonable price, build quality is good, and has all other features and benefts..

any comments on compatibility of sigma flash with not yet created pentax models.. ? is it possible to do something about it?

Bonjour Mystic,

You're welcome :)

Actually, I have no experience with the Sigma flash, only with the AF540GZ combined with the K10D.

Best regards,

so.. ok, i've bought a Pentax flash.. that AF540GZ...
and played today, with the wireless mode.. man, i must admit, that's a cool feature to have!..

The build quality is much better than Sigma's flash.. moreoever sigma flash doesn't have Synchronization cable input.. only wireless and hotshoe.. so looking to the future, i bought much more expensive Pentax.
the battery compartment door is a bit strange, one should be more attentive while opening and closing it. another minor disadvantage is,that it doesn't have a tripod mount with it.. you have to buy an adapter separately, but overall i like the product.

well, maybe it's a bit early to talk, because i did not have any sirious photoshoot yet.. but i hope, i'll like the results.
