At one time, Kodak was a big name in photography.
Now, it appears that the company's best moments are behind them.

While it is possible they can yet turn things around, is anyone confident that this company will do it?

If not, anyone have any special Kodak moments they want to share?

they still do some compacts but the only people who buy them are people who don't know about photography!

I have Kodak film rolls here. Kodak compacts are quite okay, but a bit strange in handling and features though.

I hope they'll pull through - competition encourages innovation and it doesn't hurt pricing.

I don't understand why Kodak exists...they're not that good in their printing services, their digital cameras are horrible...I know they're developing films & making big sensors for Hasselblad,Leica etc. medium format cameras, but is that enough? I don't consider the Kodak brand to mean anything today really.

According to this “rumour” Kodak is on a respirator and people are getting notices.
If Kodak gets out of the sensor business, than Leica will most likely join Nikon and Pentax on relying on Sony’s technology.

Layoffs, Layoffs

As Mitch Reifel reports in Linked-In CMOS/CCD Image Sensor Group discussions, Kodak has shuttered its CMOS sensor group. The group was the home of many technological innovations. Unfortunately the nice ideas have not translated into the market success. Sad story.

Another layoff story brought to my attention is Cypress/Fillfactory site layoffs. My understanding is that a significant part of Filfactory staff has been let go. Formerly I wrote that Fillfactory is profitable inside Cypress - it looks like I was grossly wrong. Another sad story.

Update: Kodak CIS group layoffs message disappeared from the Linked-In group. Still, Kodak layoffs are real, confirmed by other sources.

Update #2: The validity of information about Cypress/Fillfactory layoffs is questioned in comments. Till the official confirmation one should see it as an unconfirmed rumor.

I guess the answer is a little more clear now. Sad to see them go.
