Hi folks,

The X-Pro 1 is starting to look rather interesting. Leica Rumors report that "Fuji will announce their own M-mount adapter for the X-Pro 1. The camera will also have two optical magnification options: x0.37 for wider lenses and x0.60 for other lenses."

Photo Rumors also report that the "new sensor called X-Trans is a classic 16-megapixel. RGB filter is arranged in random blocks of 6x6 pixels which avoids the need for AA filter. This design requires a faster processor - the X-Pro 1 has a new EXR Processor Pro." They also report that it will have a "similar hybrid viewfinder like in the x100".

With a decent set of primes expected at launch as well it looks as though Fuji may have a winner on their hands if they price it right and would also seem to be squeezing Leica towards a full-frame sensor for their own pre-announced non-rangefinder CSCs expected towards the end of this year.

Bob.

I think I just heard a collective groan from RAW converter developers from the headaches they'll surely have over the "random" colour filter arrangement. Unless I stepped through that lecture, using non-regular sampling spaces wasn't something I recall being covered when I was in university... my thought at this time is that regardless of the sample method used, you still need an AA filter to be mathematically optimal. Fixed pattern sampling can result in moire if not adequately filtered, and I'm guessing the non-regular pattern would disperse the moire into random-like noise. It doesn't get rid of it as such, just makes it look less visible. My primary concern would be if this arrangement will impact on pixel level details.

Hi Dutch,

I've updated the thread title to include the model name. Hope that's OK?

Bob.

Hi popo,

Here's what the X-Trans sensor's Bayer alternative looks like, direct from the press conference:
    Image
They are talking $1700 for the body and $650 for the lenses, but that is to be confirmed. Methinks they live on a different planet.

On the good side, if Leica were planning an APS-C EVIL, rather than a full frame one, then Fuji may have done them a big favour with that SRP.

Bob.

I've split out the official announcement for a new sticky thread and locked this one - thanks!
