Hello all,
Surely some of you must have seen the "Digital Stills and Motion Camera" system by RED, announced earlier today.
They are essentially modular systems that seems to allow a plethora of different configurations, like a medium format camera. Their previous attempt to make a digital video camera took Hollywood by a storm. With their newly developed sensors and body parts, they claim to offer very serious photographic tools as well.

All the tech news sites and blogs are ablaze with excitement and I'm encountering very hasty and uninformed comments about what such a camera might mean for Nikon/Canon etc.
I am curious to know what you guys think about it.
They are obviously just renders at this point but RED has delivered on their promises in the past and they are a very focused and ambitious bunch.

Hi Erinc,

Yes, I was one of those sad individuals watching the RED web site as the countdown clock reached zero. Nothing happened.

Eventually after much pressing of the Reload button I saw the details of the new camera and sensors and also saw the price and quickly found something more interesting to go and do.

why pay that much.

If I remember the Wired article correctly, even with these systems costing as much as they do, they are still relatively cheap when compared to renting a film camera and then processing that film.
RED's primary objective is to provide a digital camera that can match the quality and versatility of film cameras and they did just that to a certain extent with ONE.
But this time around, I think they are being much more ambitious and presenting a more flexible system.
Being able to take still images is an extra,I think, in the way that being able to take HD video is an extra to 5DmkII.

I heard them say Canon and Nikon Lenses mount on them too...6K video with a 50mm f/1.0 anyone?

The full specs of Scarlet and Epic from RED:

They have no reflex viewfinder, so they won't replace an SLR for stills. Not to say I don't dream about one in my sleep! In time they might kill video, which could only be a good thing.
