Apart from stating the obvious. IF the UV filter serves as a protector as well what the point of having just a protector. or Im I missing something else here?

UV filters are useful for film cameras as UV light can cause "haziness". Since UV light does not affect the sensor on a DSLR, they are effectively equivalent to a standard protector.

People still use film, you know...
