I had my mind set on buying an Alpha 55--new to dslr. I found an open box deal on an alpha a390 for only $299. it is missing cables and manuals and I can't add the warranty to it. I don't see why I need cables and I think my current sony cables should work fine. I usually just take the card out and sink on the computer. The battery is only 38 dollars.

I like the idea of video and was set on the alpha 55--but this is such a great deal that I'm thinking of just getting a different video camera but only if this is comparable!! It seems like some of the language of comparision has changed on the new alpha 35, 55, 65, etc, so I'm having trouble comparing with little knowledge and I must decide fast.

Any assistance you can offer will be appreciated!

Personally I would stick with the A55. The advantages offered by the SLT technology far outweigh the A390. In this case, the A55 also offers superior image quality and high iso performance. The ONLY reason to go for the A390 is if you prefer an optical viewfinder, although I believe the A55 EVF is superior to the substandard OVF in the 390.

Also careful when you buy batteries. ONLY buy SONY batteries, after-market versions are NOT supported. only info-lithium will work. I have tried 3 different after-market batteries. Only one was recognized by my A850 and after 3 months it will not hold a charge. Make sure you buy only Sony batteries.

Good luck.
