 Post subject: Telephoto Lenses
PostPosted: Mon Jan 07, 2008 9:41 am
Im in the market for a nice telephoto zoom lense for my sony A100.

Im after something around the 75 - 300mm Mark which is why This Seems to match the description.

I dont have masses amounts of money to spend but I want a decent lense to go with my 18-75 kit lens.

I have heard that there may be a G lense out soon with the same focul length, any idea when and how much it may cost?

Are there any tamron or other 3rd party equivalents?

Are there any minolta equivalent lense's which may be worth considering? When it comes to minolter lenses I have no idea what I need.

Thanks

I can recommend the 70-210/4 (aka beercan). It is such a well build and surprisingly sharp lens with a constant f/4 aperture, I have even put up a user review here where you can see how good the colors and bokeh is on this gem. With this lens you will feel a step up in quality, which you might not with the Sony 75-300mm.

You need nothing else to mount a Minolta lens on you A100 since it's the same mount (alpha-mount or a-mount).

That is a nice looking lens and I have heard a lot about it but It looks very big and heavy and does not go up to 300mm which is a bit of a downfall. I have also heard that they are difficult to get hold of? what sort of price can I expect to pay to get my hands on one?

If at all possible im after a lense whitch has the highest length which is why the 75-300mm is the one im going for over the 18-200 lenses available.

There are a lot of them on eBay, you can even get them at a ebay store with return policy for £95. You can also get them at keh.com from $65-$254.

If you search long enough you could even get a good 2nd hand copy of both the beercan and 75-300mm (Minolta or Sony) for the price of a new Sony 75-300mm. That way you can test them both and sell the one you least like :)

There is indeed a 70-300 G SSM coming up, I'm waiting for that, but I guess that's goint to be quite expensive (about 500 to 600 euros).

Alternatives:
Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO DG MACRO
Sigma 28-300mm F3.5-6.3 DG Macro
Tamron AF18-250mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II LD Aspherical (IF)
Tamron AF70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD Macro 1:2

The best option, I think, is to buy the 70-300 G SSM, but if that's to expensive for you, a Sigma or Tamron lens might be the best option. As you see in Gordon's review of the 75-300mm Sony lens, it's not that good (the lens that is, the review is good).

No, but you might run into budget concerns. I am not aware that Sony makes a longer telephoto zoom (yet) but they certainly make a longer telephoto. A look through the Sigma Lens Chart and the Tamron Catalog (pdf file) will show you what's available from those two manufacturers.
