Sometimes I line my camera up for a picture but the shutter will not release and I get a little circle icon through the view finder. I quite often find this occurs with close up pictures.

Why is this and how can I get the shutter to work?

In this post (also posted in the Off-topic forum)you mentioned that you have a Sony A100. My assumption is that your question is related to that camera (you didn't say and you don't have your camera in your "Signature") but going on that assumption I have moved both this thread and the one I just referenced into the Sony forum where you should get the most knowledgeable answers.

I don't have access to an A100 manual here so, sorry, but I can't answer your question.

Have you tried updating your firmware? The A700 had some troubles too, but with the new firmware those should be solved.

No i havent... and have no idea how to update the firmware. how do i check what firmware I have on my camera at the moment and where do i go to get and see if there is any new updated firmware out?

What seems to be the problem is focusing at close distance. When i go close up to something it dosent focus and gives me a circle in the view finder. if i point the camera somewhere else, half click the shutter button to focus then point it back close at my original target it takes a photo.

Are you using AF-Single or AF-Servo/Continuous? My D80 won't take a shot in single until the subject is in focus so maybe it's because the subject is too close for the lens to focus.

PS: Not sure what the AF modes are called on Sonys so I just used Nikon's names.

You can check it in the menu, on the first page I think. Then go to the Sony website of your country and find the A100. In de right collum you'll find "Actions" and underneath that you click on "Support". Then you'll find several links, on of which allows you to download a new firmware version (v1.04).
Please remember I don't have an Alpha camera yet, so I haven't experienced problems like yours nor updated any firmware.

I have the latest firmware. I think its a problem with the focusing. I can do close ups but sometimes its a bit fussy with focusing when i fill the frame up with an object.
