Looks like Nikon is positioned to overtake Canon as #1.
Sony has been in the game for 2-3 years, I’m curious to see the stats in about 5 years.

Sony got 6% market share alone with the A100 and A700 in 2006??????

I do think Sony did a good job so far though. Only problem is there isn't any form of weather sealing in their lenses or bodies, so that's a big difference.

Otherwise, I'd be shooting Sony right now.

Isn't the A700 sealed? It could just be that Sony is vague about their environmental protection. Many Nikon lenses are known to be sealed but Nikon never officially reveals which ones are.

I think manufacturers shy away from claiming a lens is sealed (even some bodies I think), as you pointed out. It's probably because their ideas of what sealed is, and the consumer's idea of what is sealed is are not compatible (hence the advent of "splash resistant".

I can only imagine the backlash from claiming a body/lens is fully sealed if a couple start failing because users push the limit, i.e. taking a swim or something equally silly.

I've seen similar actually! Just on Friday I saw a guy changing the lens on a D3 in the rain, with the lens mount pointed towards the sky. He didn't even have the lens he wanted to attach in hand, and ended up fiddling in his bag for it for about 30 secs. I know the D3 is tough, but that is just stupid, and this is primarily why I would never buy used "pro" spec gear (including the A700)!

I agree! I think he was a journalist though for the local paper, and as I understand it, their gear is insured, so its probably a case of not caring since he's not the one who has to foot the bill. Shame really, but for that reason alone, I would never buy a body/lens used by any kind of working photographer.
