The only problem with a delay is anticipating ahead what will be happening. Remote cable releases are dirt cheap on ebay so there isn't any excuse not to have one.

You're absolutely right. I shot some fireworks over fourth of July and didn't have a cable release so I was forced to used the 2sec timer. It worked somewhat, but I ended up with a lot of shots where I caught the end of the fireworks, or just captured the initial explosion.

I've bought a wireless release though, which should be on its way from ebay. Something important to consider though, is that if you go wireless and the receiver mounts on the hotshoe, make sure that it's designed for the Sony/Minolta hotshoe and not the standard ISO hotshoe. From my own inquiries, I believe that Yongnuo and Phottix (Cleon II, Plato) both fit, but Aputure doesn't.
