Sorry dude! Oh well, life goes on, and I'm sure you'll get another deal during the christmas season.

As cheap as £16xx was, it's still a lot of cash. While bodies tend to get cheaper over time, my fears were the exchange rate against the yen is getting worse again thus pushing up local pricing. There are still some stores selling it at £1650 so it's not the end of the world for buying, but I need to set the limit somewhere.

The question remains how long will it be before the A850 takes its rightful place under the A900?

So, as someone looking to go full frame, what's an acceptable entry point?

For me, its highly unlikely that I will spend more than 1500.00 on a camera body, which, as cheap as the A850 might be (and I think it is a great bargain), I think it will be atleast 2 yrs before it gets to those prices. In fact, up to recently, a body only A700 was typically going for 1200. So, by this trend, Sony bodies tend to hold their prices well (maybe because of a "slower" release cycle?).

It's not as simple as giving a fixed price saying I'll bite at that point. I also have to consider the value of the overall package. While the higher spec of the A900 has additional value over the A850, for my needs I'd prefer cheaper for less. Assuming of course that it is enough cheaper, for not too much less. The A850 eventually going at around 2/3 of A900 (even assuming the A900 is on the high end of variation) is more attractive. But we're a long way from that...

Stock seems to be around the UK, and at current prices I think it could well stay unsold. Only checked two big name retailers so far, and on one the a900 is still cheaper, and they're same price at the other. I note the 5D2 is also the same price...

Anyone dare predict more *if* than *when* it will hit the 2/3 price relative to A900 as rumoured before? Even with the A900 price increases, that's a long way it needs to drop.

If it's the same price as the 5D mkII and the D700, I do not think that it'll stand a chance...

Typical A900 body only street price: £1700-1900, with the lower ones moving up it seems.
Typical 5D2 body only street price: £1900
Typical D700 body only street price: £1700-1800.

The current A850 price simply does not compute.

I hope it's just the initial high introductory price. I mean, some shops are taking pre-orders for the 7D and they're asking for £1700. These same guys as asking for £1900 for the A850. I don't know what they're smoking, but I want some! :D

If the A850 continues to be priced so similarly to the A900, it looks like the A900 might be going out of production soon. Maybe Sony has a replacement.

Well I have been in Sony Brighton earlier today and the guy in the shop said that he believes that the A850 will cost around £1300 body only. I did argue the fact that lots of online retailers are selling it as pre order for about £1900. He said that its impossible because thats what an A900 would cost. Unlike these are online retailers Sony's own shops have not got a price yet for the A850... I am just hoping that this guy knows what he is talking about

£1300 is what we would like it to sell for. Who knows if that's the reality?

Here in the Netherlands, the prices are:
A850: € 1738 - € 1990
A900: € 1946 - € 2799
5DMkII: € 2089 - € 2544
7D : € 1489 - € 1799
D700: € 1899 - € 2349

I would really like to go full frame, and the A850 seems to be a good choice. But i read the manual of the 7D, and it's a great looking camera. So now I am not sure what i'll do. And I still have my old canon gear lying around (Eos 10D).

I’ve been struggling with “upgrade” decisions over the last 2 weeks. Not because my gear isn’t good enough but just for the sake of an upgrade whether tangible or imaginary.
There are 2 - A700 (in a box) for sale in all of Vancouver for $1,080 (body only) the other 15 are all demos for about $999. I’m really tempted, this is a solid IQ body that should last me the rest of my life, but I’m leaning towards the A500 which I know little about, but it does have the new sensor with better high ISO IQ ?, (maybe time/reviews will tell) and it’s a bit smaller/lighter which I favour since I walk lots.

The FF cameras are great, but, since I’m not a Pro, I can’t see myself getting the full benefit from all that technology, my interest is candid photography and recording the growth of my kids.

Interesting enough, I was at a market today, there was a guy selling photographic 8x12 of different subjects. Fantastic captures, with technique that I haven’t been able to master yet.
Had a nice long conversation with this guy, and after talking “photo talk” he told me that he only shoots with his Canon Eos 300D (6 megapixel) camera.
So, knowing that the gear he uses to produce superior images is done on an obsolete tool that would be dismissed as inferior on these here forums … I won’t be moving up to a FF.

very interesting experience. In this rapid technological changes, people often forget that the skills and discipline that matter.
