i bought the sony a200 w/ 75/300 lens hopeing to get head shots of bear from at least a 100ft away. its not working lol, is it the lens or was i mistaking in thinking that was what a dslr and zoom lens would allow you do.

In what way is it not working?

At that range on maximum zoom, I'd estimate it might not be enough to get a really tight shot of the head only, but you should still be able to get a reasonable portrait type shot.

300mm is a decent zoom, but at 100ft you should still get decent results with a subject as large as a bear. You could always get a bigger telephoto lens

Then distance is your problem. This pic. was taken in the zoo in Amsterdam with the 70-300 G.
If you can't get closer than 100 ft, a bigger telephoto lens is needed. Maybe the recently announced 500 f4 G is something for you
