Is this type of effect gained post processing?

Or is there a setting on the Sony SLR's?

It's post processing. Selective desaturation. Using whatever method you choose, reduce the saturation of parts you don't want.

i personally think it is over done and badly executed.

i am not a massive fan of cliche'

but selective de-saturation is very easy in PS

To do this, here are the steps you need to take in Photoshop/Gimp/your image editor.

1) Duplicate the background layer.
2) Desaturate the new layer (i.e. turn it black and white)
3) Add a layer mask to the desaturated layer. Fill it with white.
4) Select the black brush and paint onto the layer mask the parts of the photo you want to look in colour.
5) When you're satisfied, flatten the image and you've got your selectively coloured photo.

is it possible to do this effect in any of the sony software provided with the camera?

No it isn't. You'll need an image editor that supports layers and layer masks. The supplied Sony software is very basic.

i meant the technique in general. thats just my opinion tho.
