to shoot the moon freehand in a clear night is pretty simple:
flip up screen
hold camera below breast with arms pressed on the side of the body
screen rests on you stomach. This way you are your own tripod.
Go to M mode
set metering to central point
ISO to 125
zoom to max until the moon is in the center
half press shutter to measure speed (can be between 1/100 to 1/300)
check the exposure, EV should be around 0
exhale and press shutter
crop the picture and it should look like this:
