hi, i have a sony a300 and need a second lens. i was just wondering what my next lens should be and whether the 75-300mm telephoto zoom lens is worth getting for my second lens. for the price. and whether its a good buy or if i should invest in something better.

Hi jrunner! Welcome to the Camera Labs forum and welcome to the Sony community! Good to have you on board!

The 75-300mm has gotten reviews that are not all too positive. You may be better of buying a third party equivant, like a Sigma or Tamron lens. Also, you might want to hold back and see whether the rumoured Sony 70-300mm, with a build-in SAM focussing motor is something you'd like. There's no known date for that just yet, but given it's been leaked on official Sony websites already, it should arrive soon.

And as with most things: you'll get what you pay for. The 75-300mm is a cheap lens, and while you'll be able to shoot great photos with it, with useable quality, you'll find better IQ with lenses that cost a little more.

Minolta 100-300mm APO is better than most cheap xx-300mm. Find one on ebay. 70-210 F4 (beercan) is even sharper; though unlike APO it suffers from CA. If you have more money, get 70-300mm G

I got the sigma, and it would be nice to have a side by side (sony vs sigma). The reason I bought the sigma, was it's look and price (sigma looks better) and it was on sale. So far I cannot say anything bad about it... and I'm certain the sony would be as good (but it's a 75-300mm).
