I think the image quality for the K10D is very good and has a lot of potential - it's just that you have to be prepared to put a bit of work in tweaking the images or settings. A few minutes in Photoshop with the Unsharp mask tool can work wonders!
It all depends what sort of look you're after and how much work you're willing to put it. If you want bright, vibrant, consumer-friendly images out of a DSLR with no work, then something like a Nikon D40(x) is a better bet.
