hi all
im david 40 something and i live in the northeast
just really getting into photography after buying a canon 1100d last year
start a 1 year fondation course in sept to learn as much as possible
ive got a few bits and pieces including a nifty 50 lens and some other minor accessories
but i am looking to buy a canon 650d this weekend which comes with a 18-55 is lens
i already have a 18-55 lens from the 1100d but 2 is better than one and this one has IS
now on top of that i am also looking to buy a good telephoto lens
the ones i am looking at are
canon 70-200 USM f4 non IS
or
sigma 150-500 hsm is F5-6.3 with IS
now i enjoy motorsports photopraphy so this is what the lens will be used for

but which lens do i buy, i have no experience of these lens, so would appreciate some good honest advice

thank you

Welcome to the forum David :D

Glad to see you are getting into photography and learning new skills. To be honest with you I wouldn't bother buying a new 18-55mm. Instead I would buy the camera body only and put the money saved towards another zoom lens, maybe the 15-85mm could be considered in the future (or one of the Tamron alternatives).

The 70-200mm f4 is a great lens and you can't really go wrong for the money. You should consider if you will need IS though. For Motorsport you won't since you will be using fast shutter speeds, but in other everyday situations you might not. I haven't read much about the 150-500mm so can't comment on that although its a very different focal range which should be considered.

thanks for the hi and reply
i have decided against the sigma for various reason
1 its not a canon, and as canon are touchy about there stuff and software, and a good friend whos is an engineer warned me against them for this reason
2 the high focal length is a bit of a put off
3 image sharpness seems to be an issue at the full 500mm

decided to go for the 650d and a 18-135 IS STM lens and the 70-200 F4 lens, to cover my bases and just leave the 50mm attatched to the 1100d body for everything else
