Hi rsunsets,

Has this post followed on from a private conversation or have you found a link to the outfit you mention on this site? If this isn't a follow on from a private conversation then it may save Gordon a little head scratching if you can tell us what prompted the post.

On the wider point, there are quite a number of "bait and switch" outfits out there. Apart from the ridiculously low initial price the big warning sign is when they send you an email after you order requesting that you phone to confirm. They then try and hard sell you a load of "extras". If you say yes you usually end up paying more in total than if you had ordered from a reputable dealer. If you refuse you rapidly find your order has been placed on backorder status and remains there in perpetuity until you cancel.

We always advise that if an offer is too good to be true then it probably is precisely that. ResellerRatings.com is usually a good cross-check but such stores often trade under regularly renewed names so it isn't foolproof.

Bob.

I can't find the page in question. You don't happen to remember which one by any chance? Was the link through one of the PriceGrabbers inserts?

Hi runsets, thanks for letting us know - I have checked the Pricegrabber section and they're not on there, so I suspect it may have been a Google ad. We'd really need to know what page it was on though to look into it further. The google ads are also geographically sensitive, so the ads you see in Arizona will be different to those we see in the UK or NZ. That said, we can preview ads for different regions and block suspect companies if required.

Our pricegrabber boxes are always a good indicator of typical and genuine pricing. Checking it now on our 40D review shows sellers from $1049 to $1299 for the 40D body alone, so anything less than $1000 should immediately ring alarm bells.

http://cameralabs.pgpartner.com/search_ ... d=47301134

In fact I wouldn't even bother looking up a company in resellerratings quoting $449 for a 40D body as anyone selling that far below typical prices is suspect.

Let us know where you saw the ad though and we'll look into it.

Gordon
