Hi

I'm kind of new here, but i think you should add a general photography forum, that way you have somewhere to post anything about photography that doesn't fit in one of the other forum instead of putting it into the off-topic forum.

Nice work guys with the forum, hope you take into consideration my suggestion.

Hi symon_say,

Thanks for the feedback. It may not be immediately obvious but the Off-topic forum is designed for exactly that purpose as, from the section guidelines post we have "Cameralabs is first and foremost a photography website, so please bear that in mind when posting in this forum. It may be an off-topic area, but should still be in some way related to photography."

Do you think we should rename the Off-topic section?

Bob.

In this case and generally speaking, yes, i'm a big fan of forums cause you can learn a lot from people with more experience and you can help people with less experience.

On most forum the off-topic forum is for post anything not related with the forum themes, in our case a General name for this forum should be a better way to call it.

You can add an off-topic forum that members can use it to post about cars, their life or any other think that members want, but a sub-forum named general is a must in every forum site.

In my case i post 2 threats in that forum one was asking for other websites related to photography and the other is about a book, i post it there cause no i could find where to fit it, but most people don't look off-topic forums cause they are looking for dedicates forum about what they want to learn.

A lot of info (i think) isn't read for a lot of members cause of the name off-topic, specially that must people don't read the stikys about rules and forum related.

Hope this can make our forum better.

I think for now we'll keep the off topic section as it is - but we may expand its coverage in the future, and there is of course also the cameralabs facebook page...

Keep in mind that not everyone has facebook. Whilst it's popular in the US, we dutch prefer Hyves. ;)

And there's no way I'm going to be on multiple social networks...;)

An idea  recently popped up in my head, for those occasions where we'd like to share something that is not photography related, but still deserves some attention:
We could start a thread in the Off Topic section called "What's on your mind?" or whatever name we choose to give it, in which members can share things that do not fit in any of the sections nor meets the Off Topic requirements.
Facebook would indeed be a good way to discuss topics like that, but as Marijn wrote, not everybody has an account. A single Sticky in Off Topic could be the solution to having non-photography-related thread pop up in the Off Topic section.

Just a suggestion, I don't really feel the need for such a thread, although I do believe it could prove a useful addition to the forum.

@ Marijn:
What's your hyves username. I'm not very active on hyves, but I'd like to add you as a friend anyways!

Yes. I think we do. If a post in a sub-forum called 'Off-Topic' has to be related to photography, it's not really what I'd consider to be 'Off-Topic'. It's more of a General (Photography) Discussion forum and should be named assuch. It's current name and description are misleading:
Quote:
"Fancy chatting about something not listed in the other forums? This is the place!"

Personally I think we should either change the name, and description of the Off Topic section to something that better fits it's purpose for discussing General Photography and adding a new 'Off-Topic' subforum that actually is 'Off-Topic' (as in, not photography-related).

OR

Change that one line in the sticky post in the Off Topic subforum to actually imply that any and all non-photography discussions are fair game (with respect to other current forum policies).

I think Camera Labs is a great place to discuss photography and somesuch, but should we really tell people to "go to another forum" just because it's not photography related? Every big forum that I have been a part of has always had a place where members could post off-topic discussions not pertaining to the forum's origins/intentions.

Added you on hyves though, and send you a special invitation... :)

yea, i think we need a separate section or a subsection of "Off Topic" to cover things that arent related to photography...cause i mean...we all do have lives outside the photography world and we would love to share our other life experiences in this community

X2, recently i see a case in that forum, some member ask about mp3 players, and we all know that this is a photography forum, but we all know that you make friends in here, and you ask to your friends about anything when you need an opinion and you talk about other things.

We all have something in common, photography and cameras, but we have other things to that i think we'll like to share with the good friends we have or can make here.

Couldn't have phrased it better!

However, perhaps a better idea would be a "sister" forum, rather than a sub-section of the Off-Topic forum. After all, this is a photography forum ;).

Hi Gordon,

Do we have a presence on orkut? Its the most popular socializing site in India. Some people do use facebook here but its not all that popular.
