Canon digital SLR upgrade - EOS 350D / XT versus EOS 5D Gordon Laing, November 2006

Canon EOS 350D / Rebel XT gallery

The following images were taken with the Canon EOS 350D / XT using the EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 lens; note the 350D / XT's APS-C sensor results in the effective focal length of each lens being multiplied by 1.6 times, so the 17-85mm delivers an equivalent range of 27-136mm. Each image was recorded using Evaluative Metering, the Large Fine JPEG mode and Parameter 1. The individual file size, exposure mode, shutter speed, aperture, ISO and lens details are listed for each image; see the intro page for the complete testing configuration.

The crops are taken from the original files, reproduced at 100% and saved in Adobe Photoshop CS2 as JPEGs with the default Very High quality preset, while the resized images were made in Photoshop CS2 and saved with the default High quality preset. The three crops are typically taken from far left, central and far right portions of each image.

Landscape: 3.46MB, Aperture Priority, 1/250, f8, ISO 100, 17-85mm at 17mm (equivalent to 27mm)

Zoomed-out to wide angle, the 350D / XT and EF-S 17-85mm capture an expansive field, although not as great as the EF 24-105mm on the 5D; see next page.

The crops are sharp and detailed, although there's some coloured fringing and geometric distortion in the far corners.

Portrait: 2.21MB, Aperture Priority, 1/800, f5.6, ISO 100, 17-85mm at 85mm (equivalent to 136mm)

Zoomed-in to telephoto, the 350D / XT with the EF-S 17-85mm delivers a smaller field of view than the EF 24-105mm on the 5D.

It can easily throw a background out of focus with its aperture wide open, while keeping the subject pin-sharp.

It is interesting to compare this shot with the 5D / 24-105mm version on the next page though, especially in terms of the background.

Macro: 2.8MB, Aperture Priority, 2 secs, f22, ISO 100, 17-85mm at 85mm (equivalent to 136mm)

Zoomed-in and positioned at its closest focusing distance, the 350D / XT with the EF-S 17-85mm is capable of delivering a greater macro reproduction than the 5D with the EF 24-105mm; this is clear when compared with the 5D gallery on the next page.
