Canon EOS 350D with 17-85mm vs Canon EOS 5D with 24-105mm macro
| To compare the macro capabilities of the Canon 350D / XT with the EF-S 17-85mm against the Canon 5D with the EF 24-105mm, we photographed
a custom chart at a focal length and distance which
delivered the maximum possible reproduction.
The dark lines are 10mm apart and the result is not cropped. Smaller areas
are preferred in this test. |

| You don't need to look at the figures to see the EF-S 17-85mm is capable of greater macro reproductions than the EF 24-105mm, but to be fair neither lens can be described as great for close-ups. Indeed the budget EF-S 18-55mm kit lens bundled with the 350D / XT is capable of much better macro results - see our 400D / XTi lens group test for examples. Ultimately if you're really into close-ups with either camera, you should look into buying extension tubes or a dedicated macro lens. |
