Canon EOS 350D with 17-85mm vs Canon EOS 5D with 24-105mm resolution

To compare the Canon EOS 350D / Rebel XT's resolving power against the EOS 5D, we photographed the Enhanced Digital Camera Resolution Chart with both cameras using their best quality JPEG and default image tone and sharpening settings.

The EOS 350D / Rebel XT was fitted with the EF-S 17-85mm lens and the EOS 5D with the EF 24-105mm lens; each was set to f8 using Aperture Priority mode.

The crops are taken from the original images, saved as High Quality JPEGs in Photoshop CS2 and presented here at 100%. Each number represents 100 lines per picture height (lpph), so a figure of 20 means a resolution of 2000 lpph.

The EOS 5D's 12.8 Megapixel sensor unsurprisingly delivers a far better result here than the 8 Megapixel sensor of the EOS 350D / Rebel XT. Indeed resolving 2300 lpph compared to 1800 is a significant difference in this test.

It's always worth comparing the difference this makes to real-life subjects though. As seen on the previous page and our second set of noise results, the 5D may resolve noticeably more detail than the 350D / Rebel XT, but it's still not a massive difference in practice. That said, it's the biggest step-up you can enjoy at the time of writing without investing in a seriously expensive EOS 1Ds Mark II.
