Outdoor scene - Canon EOS 350D with 17-85mm vs Canon EOS 5D with 24-105mm

Canon EOS 350D with EF-S 17-85mm at 26mm f8   To compare real-life performance we shot the same scene using the Canon EOS-350D / Rebel XT and EOS 5D within a few moments of each other using their best quality JPEG settings. The 350D / Rebel XT was fitted with the EF-S 17-85mm while the 5D was fitted with the EF 24-105mm, both adjusted to capture the same field and set to an aperture of f8 in Aperture Priority mode. The crops are taken from far left, center and far right portions of the originals and presented here at 100%.

The image left was taken with the Canon EOS 350D / Rebel XT using the EF-S 17-85mm lens at 26mm f8 (42mm equivalent); the original JPEG measured 3.88MB.

Viewed at 100%, the crops unsurprisingly show the EOS 5D capturing greater detail than the 350D / Rebel XT, although the difference may not be as great as you expect. A more obvious difference between the two systems here is their actual lens performance. The EF 24-105mm is clearly much sharper and better-corrected for colour fringing at its edges then the EF-S 17-85mm. Again though this result is expected as the EF 24-105mm is an 'L' lens which costs around double that of the EF-S 17-85mm. It's also revelaing this doesn't translate into optical advantages across the board as revealed in later results.
