Canon EOS 400D / Digital Rebel XTi kit lens upgrade group test Gordon Laing, September 2006 / updated July 2007

Canon EOS 400D / Digital Rebel XTi lens group test gallery

The following images were taken with the Canon EOS 400D / Rebel XTi using the Canon EF-S 17-85mm and EF-S 17-55mm lenses. Each image was recorded using the Large Fine JPEG mode and Standard Picture Style, while metering was set to Evaluative. The individual file size, exposure mode, shutter speed, aperture, ISO and lens details are listed for each image. Note the third and fourth examples are taken from our Canon EOS 400D / Rebel XTi review gallery; visit this page for more examples taken with the 400D / Rebel XTi.

The crops are taken from the original files, reproduced at 100% and saved in Adobe Photoshop CS2 as JPEGs with the Very High quality preset, while the resized full images were made in Photoshop CS2 and saved with the High quality preset. The three crops are typically taken from far left, central and far right portions of each image.

Canon EF 17-40 L

Canon 400D / XTi with EF-S 17-85mm at 17mm

This landscape shot was taken with the EF-S 17-85mm zoomed-out to 17mm.

Despite sharing the same 17mm wide rating as the 17-55 and 17-40mm lenses though, the 17-85 actually captures a slightly wider field.

It's capable of great detail, although some fringing, softness and light fall-off are visible in the extreme corners.

Portrait: 2.76MB, Aperture Priority, 1/250, f5.6, ISO 100, 17-85mm at 85mm (equivalent to 136mm)

Canon 400D / XTi with EF-S 17-85mm at 85mm

This portrait shot was taken with the EF-S 17-85mm, zoomed-into 85mm with its aperture wide open to minimise the depth-of-field.

The extra reach of this lens over the others in the group test gives it greater compositional flexibility, although if you're really into portrait work, the f2.8 aperture of the EF-S 17-55mm is ultimately preferred.

For more details on this lens, see our EF-S 17-85mm review.

Macro: 5.02MB, Aperture Priority, 1/50, f14, ISO 800, 17-55mm at 47mm (equivalent to 75mm)

Canon 400D / XTi with EF-S 17-55mm at 47mm   Canon 400D / XTi with EF-S 17-55mm at 47mm lower left crop   This macro shot was taken with the EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 lens. We moved in close to the subject and closed the aperture to f14 to ensure everything would be in focus.

With poor lighting we were forced to increase the 400D's sensitivity to 800 ISO. While some noise is visible on the 100% crops, it's still very low. The IS on the lens also ensured no camera shake.

For more details of this lens, see our EF-S 17-55mm review.

Night sky: 5.41MB, Manual, 30 seconds, f2.8, ISO 1600, 17-55mm at 17mm (equivalent to 27mm)

Canon 400D / XTi with EF-S 17-55mm at 17mm   The EF-S 17-55mm is a great performer in low light, and this shot of the night sky really puts it through its paces.

The 30 second exposure and 1600 ISO have resulted in star trails and some noise, but the point light sources remain sharp and mostly free of coma even in the corners.

For more samples of this lens in tough light conditions, see our EF-S 17-55mm review.
