Kit lens wide-angle uniformity: Canon EOS 400D / XTi vs Nikon D80 vs Sony A100

To measure wide angle lens vignetting and light fall-off we photographed a white target with a highly diffused filter. The kit lenses were tested at their widest focal length with the aperture wide open in Aperture Priority mode. The images were analysed with Imatest and the full areas presented here at a reduced resolution. Bigger percentages are better.

Once again the Canon and Sony kit lenses deliver roughly similar results, with the Nikkor trailing behind. The Nikkor DX 18-70mm really is noticeably darker in the corners than its rivals.

Kit lens telephoto uniformity: Canon EOS 400D / XTi vs Nikon D80 vs Sony A100

To measure telephoto lens vignetting and light fall-off we photographed a white target with a highly diffused filter. The kit lenses were tested at their longest focal length with the aperture wide open in Aperture Priority mode. The images were analysed with Imatest and the full areas presented here at a reduced resolution. Bigger percentages are better.

Again the Canon and Sony lenses deliver roughly the same result with the Nikkor coming in far behind. The vignetting may not be as pronounced as at wide angle, but it's still obviously darker in the corners than the Canon and Sony. To be fair though, the Nikkor lens is 2/3 of a stop brighter at its telephoto end, and it's also longer than the Canon.
