The new EOS 1000D / Rebel XS replaces the EOS 400D / XTi as the entry-level model in Canon’s range and sports the same 10.1 Megapixel resolution, 3fps continuous JPEG shooting and 2.5in screen. The big new feature is Live View, although the 1000D / XS is also Canon’s lightest DSLR to date at just 450g. Beyond this, the 1000D swaps its predecessor’s 9-point AF for a 7-point wide area AF system and Compact Flash cards for SD memory.

Canon’s new budget DSLR, the EOS 450D / Rebel XSi features a 12.2 Megapixel CMOS sensor with Live View and contrast-based AF options, a 3in screen, a switch to SD memory cards, and comes in a bundle with the EF-S 18-55mm IS lens, giving the standard kit Image Stabilisation. Other features include spot-metering, 14-bit processing, the DIGIC III processor with auto-lighting optimisation, and slightly quicker 3.5fps continuous shooting.

The EOS 40D is Canon’s latest semi-pro DSLR sporting a number of upgrades over the EOS 30D including 10.1 Megapixel resolution, Live View, 14-bit A to D conversion, anti-dust features and quick 6.5fps continuous shooting. Canon’s also beefed-up the build quality, improved the viewfinder and AF system, and additionally fitted a bigger 3in screen, which all adds up to a significant upgrade and what could be seen as a mini 1D Mark III for the rest of us.

Canon’s 1Ds Mark III is the company’s new flagship DSLR, sporting a 21.1 Megapixel full frame sensor which allows you to use EF lenses without any field reduction. The sensor also supports Live View facilities on the 3in screen, although the viewfinder still boasts 100% coverage. A pair of new DiG!C III processors allow 5fps continuous shooting and there’s also support for UDMA CF cards. Sensitivity ranges from 50 to 3200 ISO and the build quality is very tough.

Canon’s EOS 1D Mark III is designed for pro sports photographers and is the fastest DSLR in the world. It improves on both the resolution and continuous shooting of its predecessor, boasting 10.1 Megapixels and 10fps, while additionally offering an extended 6400 ISO sensitivity. The new self-cleaning APS-H sized sensor has a 1.3x field reduction factor, and suffice it to say the body's build quality is incredibly tough.

Canon's EOS 30D is the successor to the popular 20D, delivering 8.2 Megapixel resolution in a rugged magnesium alloy body with an EF and EF-S lens mount. The 30D has a 9-point AF system, shutter speeds from 30 seconds to 1/8000 plus Bulb, 5fps continuous shooting and 100 to 3200 ISO sensitivity.
